Scottie Amos, Rape and Burglary, Mississippi 2017

Tucker Man Sentenced to 14 Years in Prison for Rape and Burglary on Choctaw Indian Reservation

Scottie Amos, 26, of the Tucker Community of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, was sentenced to 168 months in federal prison for burglary and sexual assault on the Choctaw Indian Reservation. The sentencing comes after Amos pleaded guilty on January 8, 2024.

According to court documents, Amos sexually assaulted a female tribal member in her home on September 14, 2017. In a separate incident on November 2, 2017, Amos broke into another tribal home and stole items of value.

The investigation into the crimes was conducted by the Choctaw Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kevin J. Payne and Brian K. Burns leading the prosecution.

U.S. Attorney Todd W. Gee of the Southern District of Mississippi praised the efforts of the investigators and prosecutors in bringing Amos to justice. ‘This sentence is a testament to the hard work and dedication of law enforcement and prosecutors in the Southern District of Mississippi,’ Gee said.

Special Agent in Charge Robert Eikhoff of the Federal Bureau of Investigation also commended the efforts of the investigators and prosecutors, stating, ‘The FBI is committed to protecting the rights of all individuals, especially those on tribal lands.’

Amos’ 14-year sentence is a reminder that those who commit crimes on tribal lands will be held accountable. The sentencing is a step towards healing and justice for the victims and their families.

The case serves as a warning to would-be perpetrators that the justice system will not tolerate violent crimes on tribal lands.
