A tragedy unfolded in Tulsa when a 16-year-old was senselessly gunned down during an illegal handgun sale gone wrong.
On February 4, 2020, Carl John Irons Jr., 20, shot and killed the minor victim in a hail of gunfire at an apartment complex on South Mingo Road in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
According to the investigation, two groups had met for an illicit gun exchange, which quickly turned deadly. The victim, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, was struck in the head and body during the exchange and later succumbed to their injuries at an area hospital on February 8, 2020.
The crime, which occurred within the boundaries of the Muscogee Nation, shocked the community and left a family reeling in grief.
Acting U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson issued a statement regarding the sentencing, saying, ‘An illegal gun sale ended in tragedy when a 16-year-old was killed in an exchange of gunfire. Too many families have lost children to gun violence. These shootings are a waste of young lives. My thoughts are with this family as they continue to grieve the loss of this young man.’
Tulsa Police and the FBI conducted the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric O. Johnston prosecuting the case.
In a plea agreement, Irons admitted to the crime and was subsequently sentenced by U.S. District Judge Gregory K. Frizzell to 10 years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release.
The community is still grappling with the aftermath of this senseless tragedy, and our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time.
