Turman Sentenced for Gun Possession While on Pretrial Release

Andre Jamar Turman, 34, of the District of Columbia, has been meted out a severe sentence for his brazen act of illegal firearm possession while on pretrial release. Today, Turman was sentenced to 28 months in federal prison by U.S. District Court Judge Jia M. Cobb for being a previously convicted felon in possession of a loaded Haskell Model JS-45 pistol.

Turman pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon on December 17, 2024. The sentence was part of a deal that saw Turman also ordered to serve three years of supervised release following his prison term.

According to court documents, the authorities had been searching for Turman due to numerous bench warrants from D.C. Superior Court when they spotted and arrested him on Pennsylvania Avenue, SE, near Twining Square Park on May 4, 2023. A Deputy U.S. Marshal recovered a loaded Haskell Model JS-45 pistol from Turman’s right front pants pocket. The firearm was unregistered in the District of Columbia and had been reported as stolen.

Turman’s previous convictions included carrying a pistol without a license, which resulted in over a year in prison. He was on probation and pretrial release for multiple cases at the time of his arrest, including another firearm case in Maryland.

The U.S. Marshal Robert Dixon of D.C. Superior Court and Chief Pamela A. Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) joined U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro in announcing Turman’s sentence. The MPD and U.S. Marshals investigated the case, while Assistant U.S. Attorneys Shezhad Akhtar and Chrisellen Rebecca Kolb prosecuted it.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by felons on pretrial release who continue to flout the law. Turman’s sentence is a testament to the justice system’s ability to hold repeat offenders accountable for their actions.
