Counterfeit Money Scheme Leads to Guilty Pleas in Elkins

CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – In a shocking case of financial deceit, two men from Elkins, West Virginia, have pleaded guilty to participating in a counterfeit money scheme. Robert R. Teter, 30, and Jonathan J. Ross, 30, both of Elkins, West Virginia, were charged with fraudulently using counterfeit money to obtain authentic currency and other goods in Harrison County, West Virginia in late 2014.

The men repeatedly exchanged counterfeit money in order to obtain authentic United States currency, debit cards, and merchandise. This illicit operation was discovered and investigated by the United States Secret Service, the Clarksburg, West Virginia Police Department, and the West Virginia State Police.

According to the charges, Teter and Ross pleaded guilty to one count of “Uttering Counterfeit Obligations or Securities – Aiding and Abetting.” Each of them faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. The actual sentence will be based upon the severity of the offenses and the prior criminal history of the defendants.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Montoro successfully prosecuted the case on behalf of the government. U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael John Aloi presided over the hearing.

The guilty pleas mark a significant blow to the individuals involved in the scheme and serve as a warning to others who may consider engaging in similar activities.
