A pair of men with a history of crime are heading to prison after being sentenced for firearms offenses in federal court in Alabama.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Attorney’s Office, 38-year-old James Lee Thompson of Birmingham was sentenced to 63 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. On July 24, 2022, Thompson was stopped by Savannah police at the Savannah Mall after an officer observed him carrying a firearm. At the time of his arrest, Thompson had an active warrant for his arrest in Jefferson County.
Thompson’s sentence includes a 3-year term of supervised release and was imposed by U.S. District Court Judge R. Austin Huffaker Jr.
Separately, 31-year-old Aaron Deangelo Johnson of Mobile was sentenced to 87 months in prison for discharging a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence. On February 23, 2022, Johnson fired several shots in the 600 block of South Ann Street in Mobile. When police arrived, they found Johnson attempting to flee the scene in a vehicle.
Johnson’s sentence includes a 3-year term of supervised release and was imposed by U.S. District Court Judge Sarah H. Hawkins.
Both cases were investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Mobile Police Department, and were prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys David G. Estes and Erin H. Wheeler.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Alabama reminds the public that an indictment is merely an accusation and that the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
Thompson was previously convicted of armed robbery in 2005 and served a 10-year sentence. Johnson had previous convictions for robbery in 2013 and a misdemeanor assault charge in 2019.
