Two Men from Kenel Charged with Assault

Two men from Kenel, South Dakota have been charged with assault in a federal indictment.

Conrad C. Little Bear, 53, and Lavell M. Little Bear, 57, were indicted by a federal grand jury on May 15, 2013 for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury.

The charges were announced by United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson, who said the maximum penalty on each count upon conviction is 10 years of imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, or both; 3 years of supervised release; an additional 2 years of supervised release upon revocation; and a mandatory $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.

The investigation into the case is being conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Standing Rock Agency, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley is prosecuting the case.

The defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty, prosecutors noted.

Both Conrad C. Little Bear and Lavell M. Little Bear were released on bond pending trial. A trial date has not been set.
