Former Orleans Parish Bail Bonds Woman Sentenced for Conspiracy
NEW ORLEANS, LA – In a brazen scheme to defraud the Orleans Parish justice system, former bail bonds woman Tynequia Buckley, age 44, of New Orleans, was sentenced to four years of probation, with the first six months to be served on home detention.
According to court documents, Buckley worked as a licensed bail bondswoman in New Orleans from 2004 through 2012, operating out of 538 S. Broad Street. However, her employer, Rufus Johnson, was operating without a required license, making their bail bonds business illegal.
As part of her employment, Buckley gave cash and other valuable items to employees of the Clerk’s Office in exchange for their favor in allowing Johnson to use Buckley’s name and bonding license. This scheme allowed Johnson to sign Buckley’s name on official court documents, further perpetuating the scam.
Further investigation revealed that Buckley conspired with Johnson to bribe a former assistant bond clerk and a former part-time employee of the Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff’s Office, in exchange for their assistance in releasing criminal defendants from the Orleans Parish Prison without proper authorization.
Buckley pleaded guilty to a one-count Bill of Information charging her with conspiracy to commit honest services mail fraud. She is currently serving her six-month home detention period as part of her four-year probation sentence.
Acting U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans commended the work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the New Orleans Police Department, and the Metropolitan Crime Commission for their assistance in unraveling the complex web of corruption.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jordan Ginsberg, Harry W. McSherry, and Brittany Reed led the prosecution against Buckley and Johnson, bringing these corrupt individuals to justice.
