OCALA, FL – Tyran Terrell Harris, 23, of Leesburg, is facing a stiff federal sentence after being busted with a loaded firearm – a firearm that turned out to be stolen. Harris, already saddled with a rap sheet, was arrested in September after Leesburg Police officers spotted him openly carrying the weapon at an apartment complex.
According to court documents, this wasn’t Harris’s first brush with the law. He’s already a convicted felon, racking up prior convictions for grand theft, tampering with a witness, and grand theft auto. Knowing his status, officers immediately took him into custody upon seeing the gun. A subsequent check revealed the firearm had been reported missing just two weeks prior.
Harris, now indicted by a federal grand jury on December 12th, admitted he knew he wasn’t supposed to possess a firearm given his criminal history. That admission, coupled with the evidence, led to the federal charge of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. If found guilty, he’s looking at up to 15 years behind bars.
The case is being spearheaded by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Leesburg Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Hannah Nowalk handling the prosecution. While an indictment is just a formal accusation and Harris is presumed innocent until proven guilty, the evidence appears stacked against him.
Federal officials are touting this case as part of “Project Safe Neighborhoods,” a broad initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by uniting law enforcement at all levels with the communities they serve. The program emphasizes building trust, supporting local organizations, and focusing enforcement efforts.
The Department of Justice launched a renewed push for PSN in 2021, emphasizing a data-driven approach to reducing violence. Whether this particular case will significantly impact overall crime rates remains to be seen, but for now, one less illegally possessed firearm is off the streets of Leesburg, and Tyran Terrell Harris faces a long reckoning for his actions.
