Tyree Irving Sentenced for School Break-Ins and Barber Shop Heist

Washington – Tyree Irving, 20, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced today to two years in prison for a brazen series of break-ins at two elementary schools and a barber shop just last year. U.S. Attorney Channing D. Phillips announced the sentence.

Irving pled guilty in November 2016 to one count of conspiracy to commit burglary and three counts of second-degree burglary. He will serve his time under the supervision of the Honorable Neal E. Kravitz, followed by three years of supervised release.

The government’s evidence detailed a string of early morning April 2, 2016 break-ins at Barnard Elementary School and Houston Elementary School. Individuals broke windows to gain entry, with surveillance footage showing masked men carrying stolen electronics, including multiple iPads and computers.

Adding to the chaos, police discovered a van with its ignition punched out outside Houston Elementary, containing evidence linking it to the school break-ins. A separate investigation revealed another burglary at a nearby barber shop, where thieves took Apple keyboards and mice.

Irving was ultimately linked through DFS’s latent fingerprint analysis, including items such as an iMac monitor and computer accessories stolen from Barnard Elementary School.

U.S. Attorney Phillips praised the Metropolitan Police Department, District of Columbia Public Schools, and the DFS for their roles in the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Gregory Rosen and Jillian Willis were also commended for their work on the case.
