Tyrone D. Johnson, an armed career criminal, will serve time in prison for carrying a firearm in a Savannah mall and another charge of discharging a firearm in a neighborhood.
A 29-year-old from Mobile, Alabama, Johnson was sentenced to 63 months in federal prison on charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. The sentences are to run concurrently.
On February 2, 2023, Johnson was stopped by law enforcement at a Savannah, Alabama mall after security reported that he was carrying a gun. A search of Johnson’s person revealed a loaded 9mm handgun and a magazine containing 15 rounds of ammunition.
On December 12, 2022, Johnson fired several shots at a residence in the 500 block of 12th Street in Mobile, Alabama. The shots were fired from a vehicle Johnson was in. No one was injured in the incident.
Johnson has a prior conviction for robbery and is considered an armed career criminal, as defined by federal law. His sentences include a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison due to his prior conviction.
Johnson was arrested on February 2, 2023, and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, a charge that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. He was also charged with discharging a firearm during a crime of violence, a charge that carries a mandatory minimum penalty of 10 years in prison.
U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Alabama, Sean M. Costello, praised the work of law enforcement in bringing Johnson to justice. ‘The sentences handed down today demonstrate our commitment to keeping our communities safe from gun violence and violent crime.’
The case was investigated by the Mobile Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher O. Wilson.
