PHILADELPHIA, PA – A Philadelphia man is facing federal charges for allegedly torching a SunRay Drugs Pharmacy in West Philadelphia during the height of unrest in May 2020. Tyrone Wise, 34, was indicted today on one count of arson, according to authorities.
The indictment details that on May 31, 2020, as protests and widespread disturbances rocked the nation, Wise allegedly ignited a fire inside the building located at 25 South 60th Street, at the corner of Ludlow and 60th Streets. The blaze caused significant damage to the SunRay Drugs Pharmacy and multiple apartments within the structure, displacing residents and endangering lives.
Federal prosecutors are alleging Wise deliberately set the fire amidst the chaos. While the region was grappling with both lawful demonstrations and escalating unlawful activity, the indictment claims Wise took the opportunity to commit a destructive act. The motive remains unclear at this stage of the investigation.
If convicted of arson, Wise faces a stiff penalty. He is looking at a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years behind bars, with a maximum possible sentence of 20 years imprisonment. Additional fines and other penalties could also be imposed upon conviction.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), along with the Philadelphia Police Department, spearheaded the investigation into the arson. Assistant United States Attorney Kevin Jayne is prosecuting the case, presenting the evidence gathered during the lengthy probe.
It’s crucial to remember that an indictment is merely an accusation, and Wise is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, led by Jacqueline C. Romero, will proceed with the prosecution, seeking justice for the damage caused and the potential harm inflicted on the community. Anyone with further information regarding the incident is urged to contact the ATF or the Philadelphia Police Department.
