Crime Wave Hits Jacksonville: ‘Take 25’ Campaign Unveiled
Florida authorities are cracking down on crimes against children in Jacksonville, as part of a nationwide effort to prevent and prosecute exploitation cases. U.S. Attorney A. Lee Bentley, III has taken a stand against child predators, who are using increasingly cunning tactics to target innocent minors.
In a shocking revelation, it has been discovered that child pornography producers are victimizing children of all ages, from infants and toddlers to adolescents. The statistics are alarming: about half of the victims are younger than 12 years old, with 24 percent being pubescent and 76 percent prepubescent according to NCMEC.
The ‘Take 25’ child safety campaign, created by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) in 2007, encourages parents to take 25 minutes to talk to their children about safety and ways to prevent abduction. This campaign has gained momentum, with law enforcement agencies from across the country joining forces to combat child exploitation.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida has brought 292 Project Safe Childhood cases against 297 individuals, resulting in charges including conspiring to travel in interstate commerce to engage in illicit sexual conduct, production of child pornography, distribution and receipt of child pornography, and possession of child pornography.
Human trafficking cases have also been prosecuted, with individuals, including minors, being forced to commit commercial sex acts. The Middle District of Florida has prosecuted numerous cases involving human trafficking, with each of the five division offices bringing cases against perpetrators.
Law enforcement agencies participating in today’s event include the Federal Bureau of Investigation; U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations; the Naval Criminal Investigative Service; the Florida Department of Law Enforcement; State Attorney’s Office (Fourth Judicial Circuit); Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office; Clay County Sheriff’s Office, and the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.
The Department of Justice has placed a high priority on protecting and combating the sexual exploitation of minors, with the goal of reducing the incident of sexual exploitation of children. The ‘Take 25’ campaign is a crucial step in achieving this goal, and Florida authorities are committed to making a difference in the lives of children across the state.
As part of the campaign, parents are urged to take 25 minutes to talk to their children about safety and ways to prevent abduction. This simple yet effective step can make a significant impact in protecting our children from the hidden dangers that exist online and elsewhere.
