U.S. Attorney Martinez to Lead Election Fraud Protection in New Mexico
ALBUQUERQUE – In a move to ensure the integrity of the upcoming general elections, U.S. Attorney Damon P. Martinez has appointed Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathon M. Gerson as the District Election Officer for the District of New Mexico.
Gerson will be responsible for overseeing the District’s handling of complaints of election fraud and voting rights abuses in consultation with Justice Department Headquarters in Washington.
“Every citizen must be able to vote without interference or discrimination, and to have that vote counted without it being stolen because of fraud,” said U.S. Attorney Martinez. “The Justice Department will act promptly and aggressively to protect the integrity of the election process.”
The Department of Justice has an important role in deterring election fraud and discrimination at the polls, and combating these violations whenever and wherever they occur.
Federal law protects against such crimes as intimidating or bribing voters, buying and selling votes, impersonating voters, altering vote tallies, stuffing ballot boxes, and marking ballots for voters against their wishes or without their input.
“The franchise is the cornerstone of American democracy,” said U.S. Attorney Martinez. “We all must ensure that those who are entitled to the franchise exercise it if they choose, and that those who seek to corrupt it are brought to justice.”
AUSA/DEO Gerson can be reached by the public at (505) 362-3147. The FBI will also have special agents available to receive allegations of election fraud and other election abuses on Election Day.
