Dominic Francis Labiran, Money Laundering, New York 2024

GRIMY NEWS — New York’s top federal prosecutor has announced the stunning extradition of Dominic Francis Labiran, a citizen of both the United Kingdom and Nigeria, for his alleged involvement in a massive international money laundering conspiracy. U.S. Attorney Damian Williams revealed that Labiran was extradited from Benin on June 18th, following his arrest there last October.

According to the charges, Labiran is accused of participating in a scheme that funneled millions of dollars through bank accounts under his control. The operation, which spanned from March to June 2019, was part of a broader conspiracy led by Alade Kazeem Sodiq, alias ‘Eluku,’ who fraudulently obtained funds from financial institutions by posing as legitimate accountholders.

Labiran, now aged 62, is facing serious charges of conspiracy to commit money laundering and actual money laundering. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison. His extradition marks a significant victory for global law enforcement cooperation.

U.S. District Judge Katherine Polk Failla arraigned Labiran on Tuesday, with the prosecution being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jonathan Rebold and Andrew Rohrbach. The investigation and extradition were supported by the FBI, the Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs, the U.S. Embassy in Benin, and numerous local authorities.

Speaking about the case, U.S. Attorney Williams emphasized the importance of international collaboration in fighting financial crime: “This extradition highlights the effectiveness of global cooperation in chasing down those who engage in fraudulent schemes and money laundering.”

The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty, but if convicted, Labiran could face a substantial sentence.
