MALVIN BERGERON, a 63-year-old resident of Jefferson Parish, has been charged with stealing from his own union, according to federal officials.
Bergeron, the former President and Secretary Treasurer of the Graphic Communications Union Local 537M, embezzled $4,041.88 from the union’s account between May 9, 2008, and February 9, 2009, by writing, endorsing, and cashing checks made payable to him personally that were not authorized by the union’s bylaws.
As union President, Bergeron had access to the funds in the union account through checks, allowing him to carry out the alleged scheme. The U.S. Department of Labor investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Spiro G. Latsis is prosecuting it.
U.S. Attorney Dana J. Boente emphasized that the bill of information is merely a charge and that Bergeron’s guilt must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
If convicted, Bergeron faces a maximum term of imprisonment of five years, a fine of $10,000, and three years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability within labor organizations. It also highlights the ongoing efforts of federal investigators to root out corruption and embezzlement in the union sector.
Bergeron’s case is a stark reminder that no one is above the law, and those who abuse their positions of trust will be held accountable for their actions.
