Defendant: Eileen M. Decker, Resignation, California 2017

Grimy Times can confirm that Eileen M. Decker, the United States Attorney for the Central District of California, has resigned from her position at the request of the President. Decker made the statement, "It has been an honor to serve the people of the Central District of California as the United States Attorney," highlighting her dedication to the office and its staff.

Decker took office in June 2015 and has been a key figure in the prosecution of high-profile cases. Her tenure saw the creation of the National Security Division (NSD), which combined two sections formerly in the Criminal Division – the Terrorism and Export Crimes Section and the Cyber and Intellectual Property Crimes Sections.

The San Bernardino terrorist attack in December 2015 marked a significant challenge for law enforcement, as Decker’s team embedded prosecutors with law enforcement to assist in the response and investigation. The case led to the indictment and convictions of three of the shooters’ family members and Enrique Marquez Jr., who purchased the assault weapons used in the attack.

Decker’s office also prosecuted the high-profile case against Apple over the San Bernardino shooter’s iPhone, which brought national attention to the problem of "going dark." The office secured convictions for violent crime and human trafficking cases, including the conviction and sentencing of Paul Ciancia, who murdered Transportation Safety Administration officer Gerardo Hernandez and received a life plus 60-year sentence.

Decker oversaw a significant increase in the number of illegal weapons prosecutions, including four convictions in two days. Her office obtained a 40-year sentence against Gardena gang member and long-time pimp Laron Darrell Carter for the sex trafficking of children. Carter’s conduct spanned a decade, as he prostituted girls as young as 13 and subjected some of them to beatings.

Decker’s resignation marks the end of her tenure as US Attorney, but her legacy will be remembered for the significant impact she made in the prosecution of high-profile cases in California.
