University of New Mexico, Cover-up of Sexual Assault, New Mexico 2024

The University of New Mexico is under fire for allegedly covering up sexual assaults on campus. The U.S. Justice Department has launched an investigation into the school’s handling of reported sexual assaults and harassment.

According to sources, the university’s policies and practices for preventing sexual assault and harassment will be evaluated as part of the review. The investigation will also examine how the university investigates and responds to student complaints of sexual violence, harassment, and retaliation.

Attorneys from the Civil Rights Division’s Educational Opportunities Section and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico are conducting the investigation. Anyone with information related to sexual assaults or harassment at the University of New Mexico is encouraged to come forward.

The investigation is being conducted under Title IV of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibit sex discrimination in education programs.

The University of New Mexico is a public research university located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The university has a student body of over 32,000 students.
