Heroin Distribution Ring Busted in East St. Louis
On Friday, October 14, 2016, Urechan D. Brown, 39, of East St. Louis, IL, received a 60-month prison sentence for his role in a heroin distribution ring. The sentencing marks the end of a long investigation into Brown’s involvement in the illicit trade.
Brown was found guilty of Conspiracy to Distribute Heroin in Excess of 100 grams, Distribution of Heroin, and Possession with Intent to Distribute Heroin. The charges were filed after Brown admitted to distributing over 100 grams of heroin in East St. Louis between June 2014 and August 2015, in conjunction with his co-defendant Kelvin B. Hughes.
Brown’s nephew, Kelvin B. Hughes, was also sentenced to 60 months’ imprisonment on September 8, 2016, for his role in the heroin distribution ring.
The investigation into Brown’s activities was led by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Illinois State Police Metropolitan Enforcement Group of Southwestern Illinois (MEGSI), and the Clinton County, IL Sheriff’s Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Robert L. Garrison.
Brown has been in federal custody since his arrest in August 2015 and will have to serve a 4-year term of supervised release after his release from prison. The sentencing brings an end to Brown’s involvement in the heroin trade and serves as a warning to others involved in similar activities.
As authorities continue to crack down on heroin distribution in the region, residents of East St. Louis can rest a little easier knowing that those responsible for bringing this poison into their community are being held accountable.
