USPS Employee Jailed for Stealing Mail
A former United States Postal Service (USPS) employee has been sentenced to prison for stealing mail from his workplace. MICHAEL McGUIRK, 37, of Windham, was sentenced to three months of imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, for theft of mail by a postal employee.
According to court documents, between September 2019 and May 2020, McGuirk stole numerous pieces of mail, including packages and greeting cards that contained gift cards or other items of value, while employed as a sales associate at the U.S. Post Office in Columbia.
Surveillance camera footage provided evidence of McGuirk’s crimes, depicting him rifling through the mail, concealing mail in his clothing, opening packages and envelopes, and taking cash from the reserve cash register. The investigation further revealed that McGuirk attempted to sell some of the items he stole from the mail on eBay.
McGuirk resigned from the USPS in May 2020 and pleaded guilty to the offense on March 30, 2021. He is required to report to prison on September 14, 2021, and must pay $5,774.70 in restitution, as ordered by Judge Vanessa L. Bryant.
The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Postal Service Office of the Inspector General, with prosecution provided by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tara E. Levens. Individuals who believe they are victims of mail theft are encouraged to file a complaint by calling 888-USPS-OIG or visiting https://www.uspsoig.gov/form/file-online-complaint.
McGuirk’s actions not only resulted in financial losses for his victims, but also undermined the trust placed in postal employees to handle sensitive and valuable items.
As he begins his prison sentence, McGuirk should take this opportunity to reflect on the consequences of his actions and the importance of upholding the integrity of the USPS.
