WASHINGTON D.C. – Kevin Brent Buchanan, 63, of Tooele, Utah, has admitted to a chilling campaign of threats against employees of a D.C.-based Palestinian rights organization. Buchanan pleaded guilty yesterday to one count of transmitting in interstate commerce a communication containing a threat to injure another person, a charge carrying a hefty penalty.
According to court documents, Buchanan unleashed a barrage of five voicemail messages between October 31, 2023, and November 2, 2023, targeting individuals connected to the organization. The content, frankly, is venomous. On November 2nd, Buchanan ranted, stating, “Your families are going to be followed and watched;” “You don’t even belong in America;” and spewed a hateful, expletive-laden wish for the death of Muslims in the United States, concluding with a direct threat: “You are all going to [expletive] die, you pieces of [expletive] traitors.”
The Justice Department isn’t mincing words. Buchanan admitted his actions were deliberately aimed at the organization due to the Palestinian background of its staff and members, and their advocacy work. This wasn’t random rage; it was targeted intimidation fueled by prejudice. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro made the announcement, signaling a zero-tolerance stance on such threats.
Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly has set a sentencing hearing for November 18, 2025. Buchanan now faces a potential five-year prison sentence and a fine of up to $250,000. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon of the Civil Rights Division and FBI Assistant Director in Charge Steven J. Jensen of the Washington Field Office joined in the announcement, highlighting the interagency cooperation in bringing Buchanan to justice.
The investigation was spearheaded by the FBI’s Washington Field Office, with crucial assistance from the Salt Lake City division and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Timothy Visser and Joshua Gold, along with Trial Attorney Sanjay Patel of the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division, are prosecuting the case. This prosecution sends a clear message: threatening individuals or organizations based on their ethnicity or advocacy will not be tolerated.
This case, docket number 24cr256, is a stark reminder of the rising tide of hate-fueled threats in a politically charged climate. While the courts will determine Buchanan’s fate, his actions have already caused fear and disruption. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing. It’s another example of how hate festers and spills over into criminal behavior, and why vigilance is crucial.
