Flavio Cesar Mazariegos Covarrubias, Fentanyl Trafficking, Utah 2024

FLAVIO CESAR MAZARIEGOS COVARRUBIAS, a 25-year-old from Taylorsville, Utah, finds himself behind bars following an intensive undercover operation targeting drug trafficking. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah filed a federal criminal complaint on January 31, charging Covarrubias with possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute.

Court documents reveal that the FBI’s Wasatch Metro Drug Task Force (WMDTF) launched an investigation into Covarrubias and his alleged drug trafficking organization. The group is suspected of distributing large quantities of narcotics in Utah. The WMDTF’s efforts culminated in an undercover agent purchasing fentanyl from Covarrubias, leading to his arrest.

Agents seized approximately 5,000 blue-colored pills and around 40 brightly-colored pills that field-tested positive for fentanyl—a schedule II controlled substance. These brightly-colored pills are often referred to as ‘rainbow fentanyl’ or ‘skittles,’ designed to resemble candy and entice young people into drug use.

U.S. Attorney Trina A. Higgins of the District of Utah announced the charges against Covarrubias, who is now facing serious federal prosecution. Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen L. Nelson is handling the case for the government.

The FBI remains at the forefront of this investigation, demonstrating their commitment to combating drug trafficking across the state. A criminal complaint serves as a formal accusation and does not constitute evidence of guilt. Covarrubias maintains his innocence until proven otherwise.
