Vazha Gabadadze, Extortion, New York 2024

A notorious Georgian organized crime boss has been convicted and sentenced for extortion offenses in New York.

Vazha Gabadadze, 42, was sentenced to 30 months in prison, along with his associates Teimuraz Tavberidze, Kakha Katsadze, and Davit Tikaradze, who received 21 months, 21 months, and 12 months respectively.

The extortion scheme, which dated back to 2017, involved Gabadadze demanding $15,000 from a victim in Georgia, who later moved to the US. Gabadadze followed the victim to the US and continued to extort him, threatening to kill and maim him and his family if he did not pay.

The defendants received approximately $19,000 during the course of the extortion. Each of the defendants played a particular role in executing the extortion, with Gabadadze as the leader and ultimate beneficiary of the extortion payments.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and prosecuted by the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.

Vazha Gabadadze is a crowned ‘vor v zakone’ and the leader of a criminal enterprise from the Republic of Georgia, a fraternal order of criminals that dates back to the time of the czars.

The extortion scheme, which was carried out in the US, highlights the reach and influence of organized crime groups from abroad.

Acting US Attorney Matthew Podolsky praised the outstanding work of the FBI and the career prosecutors of the US Attorney’s Office, saying, ‘Vazha Gabadadze and his associates threatened to mutilate and kill a victim if he did not provide them with money.  They intimidated the victim, relying on their connections to violent organized crime, to obtain thousands of dollars.  But thanks to the dedication of the FBI and the career prosecutors of this Office, all four defendants have been brought to justice and will serve federal prison time for their crimes.’
