James Calvin Talley Jr, Methamphetamine Trafficking, Alabama 2024

James Calvin Talley, Jr., 37, of Verbena, Alabama, is staring down a life behind bars after a federal jury convicted him on multiple counts of drug trafficking and illegal firearm possession. Found guilty of possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, using a phone to facilitate a drug crime, and being a felon in possession of a firearm, Talley’s criminal past now seals his future. With two prior felony drug convictions, the mandatory minimum for the methamphetamine charge alone ensures he will die in prison unless appeals intervene.

The case exploded on December 3, 2016, when a DEA-coerced drug courier delivered over 100 pounds of marijuana to Talley’s Verbena home. The courier, arrested earlier in Texas, cooperated under pressure. Surveillance footage captured Talley taking control of the vehicle and driving it alone to a house in Marbury, Alabama—owned by co-conspirator Richie Dale Murphy. Backup rolling, law enforcement watched as Talley backed the car to the front door and popped the trunk. Sirens lit up the night. Talley bolted inside—then tried fleeing out the back. Cops caught him scrambling through the yard.

Inside Murphy’s Marbury house, agents uncovered a narcotics war chest: two loaded pistols, more than 3 pounds of methamphetamine, over $20,000 in cash, marijuana, and packaging supplies. But that wasn’t all. A subsequent raid on Talley’s own home revealed a safe under the bed—stocked with two more pistols, over $50,000 in cash, a currency counter, drug ledgers, and receipts for wire transfers of massive sums. The operation reeked of a well-organized drug ring, not a lone offender.

Richie Dale Murphy, already facing justice, flipped on Talley. After pleading guilty to possession with intent to distribute marijuana and methamphetamine, and to possessing a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking, Murphy took the stand. He told jurors he and Talley ran a joint drug business—and that Talley used Murphy’s Marbury home as a stash house for both marijuana and meth. His testimony painted a damning picture: coordinated, calculated, and armed to the teeth.

Now, Murphy awaits sentencing on March 19, 2018, with a minimum of 15 years looming. Talley’s fate hangs on a date yet to be set. But the math is brutal: life for methamphetamine trafficking, up to 10 years for marijuana and firearm possession as a felon, and another 4 years for using a phone to push drugs. Stacked together, it’s a death sentence by incarceration.

The takedown was a full-force operation led by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Autauga County Sheriff’s Office, and Chilton County Sheriff’s Office. Support poured in from the Alabama Attorney General’s Office, Millbrook Police Department, Montgomery Police Department, and Prattville Police Department. Prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys John Geer and Kevin Davidson, who ensured the evidence spoke louder than the defendant’s silence. The message is clear: in Alabama’s underground drug trade, the feds are watching—and they’re not backing down.
