A Hancock man has been handed a stiff sentence for his role in manufacturing methamphetamine. Michael Wood, 46, of Hancock, was sentenced to sixty months imprisonment on his guilty plea to a charge of conspiracy to manufacture and distribute five grams or more of methamphetamine.

Wood was arrested in November 2012 after the Vermont Drug Task Force (VDTF) executed a search warrant at his residence, seizing evidence of methamphetamine production. The VDTF had been investigating Wood for his role in manufacturing and distributing the highly addictive substance at his residence in Hancock during fall 2012.

According to court documents, Wood manufactured and distributed methamphetamine, with the total amount being determined to be between twenty to thirty-five grams. Wood has been detained since his arrest in 2012.

United States Attorney Tristram J. Coffin commended the investigation into methamphetamine production by the VDTF and thanked the Vermont Attorney General’s Office for its assistance and cooperation. Federal Defender Michael Desautels represented Wood, while the case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig Nolan.

Wood will also serve four years supervised release after his incarceration ends. The sentencing was handed down by United States District Judge William K. Sessions III.

Wood’s case highlights the ongoing struggle against methamphetamine production and distribution in Vermont. As law enforcement continues to crack down on those involved, residents can rest assured that their communities are being protected.

The Grimy Times will continue to follow this and other cases involving methamphetamine production and distribution in the Green Mountain State.
