A Vermont man’s twisted friendship with a family led to the sexual abuse of their 6-year-old son and distribution of the abuse photos online.
Jeffrey Paul Coolidge, 61, of Montpelier, befriended a family who had just immigrated to the US, gaining their trust by inviting them to dinner and showering their kids with gifts.
But Coolidge had a dark motive: he repeatedly abused the 6-year-old boy, taking photos of the abuse and distributing them on a dark-web site he frequented.
Coolidge’s abuse was discovered in August 2023, and he was charged with Distribution and Possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material.
On April 10, 2026, US District Judge Frank P. Geraci Jr. sentenced Coolidge to 20 years in federal prison, followed by a lifetime of supervised release.
The case was investigated by multiple agencies, including Homeland Security Investigations and the Vermont Attorney General’s Office, and prosecuted by the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Vermont.
