BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK – Nathan E. Boguhn, 50, of Vestal, New York, has confessed to a horrifying crime: the distribution and receipt of child pornography. The sickening details emerged yesterday as Boguhn pled guilty to three counts related to the online exploitation of children, according to United States Attorney Richard S. Hartunian and FBI Special Agent in Charge Vadim Thomas.
The investigation revealed that in 2016, Boguhn wasn’t just passively consuming this vile material. He actively downloaded it from the internet and, even more disturbingly, facilitated its spread by maintaining a file-sharing program that allowed others access. Senior Judge Thomas J. McAvoy presided over the guilty plea, a small step toward justice for the victims whose lives Boguhn so carelessly disregarded.
Come July 18, 2017, Boguhn will face the music. He’s looking at a minimum of five years behind bars, but the potential sentence stretches to a full twenty years in prison. Beyond incarceration, he could be hit with a fine of up to $250,000 and a supervised release period ranging from five years to life. The judge will weigh the severity of the crimes, federal sentencing guidelines, and other pertinent factors when delivering the final sentence.
This wasn’t a solo operation. The Mid-State Child Exploitation Task Force, a coalition of the FBI and New York State Police, spearheaded the investigation, with crucial assistance from the Town of Vestal Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Miroslav Lovric is prosecuting the case, relentlessly pursuing justice for the innocent children harmed by Boguhn’s actions.
The case is part of a broader initiative known as Project Safe Childhood, launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice. This project brings together federal, state, and local resources to identify, apprehend, and prosecute individuals involved in the online exploitation of children, and, crucially, to rescue the victims. Boguhn remains in custody of the U.S. Marshal’s Service, awaiting his sentencing.
