BOSTON, MA – In a significant blow to organized crime in Western Massachusetts, Vicente Gonzalez, 45, of Springfield, MA, has been sentenced to 220 months in prison followed by four years of supervised release for directing a violent criminal enterprise that trafficked large amounts of cocaine and crack cocaine throughout the region.
Gonzalez’s organization, which included at least 10 individuals, served as lookouts, runners, managers, enforcers, and manufacturers to support the daily sale of cocaine and crack cocaine in the Holyoke and Springfield areas. The primary base of operations was an apartment building in Holyoke, where Gonzalez maintained an arsenal of firearms.
At the height of his operation, Gonzalez’s organization was distributing approximately 500 grams of cocaine per month in the area of the apartment building alone between April 2021 and March 2022. This is according to a federal investigation that revealed the scope of Gonzalez’s crime.
As part of his operation, Gonzalez used violence and threats of violence to control his territory in Holyoke. In June 2021, he led an attempted armed kidnapping of a rival drug dealer at the apartment building, which was captured on surveillance video.
Gonzalez’s significant criminal history includes violent offenses and narcotics activity. He has prior convictions for armed home invasion in Florida and a narcotics conviction in Massachusetts.
U.S. Senior District Court Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton handed down the sentence. The case is part of the Homeland Security Task Force initiative established by Executive Order 14159.
The investigation involved valuable assistance from the Massachusetts State Police and the Hampden District Attorney’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Neil L. Desroches and Annapurna Balakrishna prosecuted the case.
