Victor Craighead, 45, Fatally Shot by NYSP in Lewis County

A 45-year-old man is dead after a confrontation with New York State Police (NYSP) in Lewis County. Victor Craighead, 45, was shot and killed by a trooper during an encounter at a mobile home in the town of Diana on March 28, 2026.

According to the New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI), the incident began when NYSP troopers responded to a 911 call at a mobile home on Alpine Road in Diana on the evening of March 27, 2026. The following morning, Craighead emerged from the mobile home armed with a long gun and fired at the troopers who were in an armored vehicle.

One trooper returned fire, striking Craighead. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The officers recovered a long gun at the scene of the shooting.

The OSI is conducting an investigation into the fatal shooting, as required by New York State Executive Law Section 70-b. The law mandates that OSI assess every incident where a police officer may have caused a person’s death, regardless of whether the officer was on-duty or off-duty.
