Raleigh, NC – In a shocking turn of events, a federal grand jury in Raleigh has returned indictments charging five aliens with Illegal Reentry of a Deported Alien, a serious crime that carries maximum penalties of up to 20 years imprisonment.
The defendants, identified as Victor Hugo Espinoza-Hernandez, 50, of Honduras; Irael Perez-Lopez, 34, of Guatemala; Victor Sanchez-Ismerio, 38, of Mexico; Melecio Morales, 33, of Mexico; and Arturo Espinoza-Perez, 30, of Mexico, were found in various counties in North Carolina.
According to the indictment, Espinoza-Hernandez was previously removed from the United States and found in Nash County. Perez-Lopez, who has a history of Driving Under the Influence, was previously deported twice and found in Brunswick County.
Sanchez-Ismerio, who was previously removed from the United States, has a conviction for attempted Forcible Rape in the Second Degree and was found in Brunswick County. Morales, who was previously deported three times, has a felony conviction for conspiracy to manufacture marijuana and was found in Sampson County.
Espinoza-Perez, who was previously removed from the United States after an aggravated felony conviction for statutory rape, was found in Wake County. If convicted, the defendants could face maximum penalties of up to 20 years imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and a term of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.
The charges and allegations contained in the indictments are mere accusations, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The cases are being investigated by ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations and Homeland Security Investigations.
The indictment highlights the importance of immigration laws and the consequences of violating them. As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen what other evidence will come to light and how the defendants will plead in court.
