Ignacio Adrian Sobers Jr., a federal correctional officer at the United States Penitentiary in Victorville, has agreed to plead guilty to accepting a $1,000 bribe in exchange for smuggling contraband to an inmate. The 31-year-old of San Bernardino was caught by federal authorities on January 21 after being provided with a package containing prohibited items such as MP3 players and pornographic materials inside a fast-food restaurant parking lot.
Sobers’s plea agreement was filed in United States District Court, where he faces up to 15 years in federal prison. United States Attorney Eileen M. Decker emphasized the serious nature of Sobers’s betrayal of his duties, stating that law enforcement officers must uphold the law and act in the public interest.
Prison officials were investigating an inmate for illegal activity when the inmate provided information about Sobers’s involvement. Sobers was released on a $10,000 bond after his initial court appearance on January 23, with his arraignment set for February 22.
The investigation into Sobers’s actions was conducted by the Justice Department’s Office of the Inspector General, and the case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Julius J. Nam. Sobers will face a maximum statutory sentence of 15 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to one count of acceptance of a bribe by a public official.
According to the plea agreement, Sobers was fully aware that his actions were illegal and posed a threat to the security of the prison, yet he continued to accept bribes. This incident has further eroded public confidence in law enforcement and highlights the need for strict adherence to the laws governing correctional facilities.
