Vida Med Center and Med-Union Medical Center Hit with $11M Health Care Fraud Charges

MIAMI – The United States has filed civil forfeiture complaints in the Southern District of Florida against Vida Med Center LLC and Med-Union Medical Center, Inc., accused of defrauding Medicare out of more than $33 million. According to allegations, both companies submitted false claims for durable medical equipment (DME) that were unnecessary or not provided as stated.

Vida Med Center’s submissions totaled $14,110,820.00 with $8,759,036.68 in reimbursements. Med-Union Medical Center’s claims topped $19,044,516.07, yielding $14,167,792.92. Notably, all of Med-Union’s paid claims were based on prescriptions from a single provider.

The civil forfeiture actions aim to recover $967,760.37 and $10,014,325.40 in proceeds from the fraudulent scheme. U.S. Attorney Hayden P. O’Byrne for the Southern District of Florida led the announcement alongside Acting Special Agent in Charge Jesus Barranco of HHS-OIG and Special Agent in Charge Brett D. Skiles of the FBI.

FBI Miami and HHS-OIG are conducting investigations into the cases, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Marx P. Calderón and Joshua Paster prosecuting the civil actions. It’s important to note that a civil forfeiture complaint is merely an allegation; the allegations will be proven in court.
