BOSTON – A Lowell man has been brought to justice for his role in a devastating drug trafficking conspiracy that put the lives of countless individuals at risk. Vimoon Sortsoy, 29, pleaded guilty today in federal court in Boston to his involvement in a conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of a mixture or substance containing methamphetamine.
According to court documents, Sortsoy conspired to distribute counterfeit prescription pills pressed to resemble Adderall, which in fact contained methamphetamine. The pills were sold in the Lowell area, posing a significant threat to public health and safety. In a series of controlled purchases conducted by law enforcement, Sortsoy sold counterfeit pills containing methamphetamine to a cooperating witness. In total, Sortsoy sold approximately 400 grams of counterfeit pills containing methamphetamine.
The charge of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of a mixture or substance containing methamphetamine provides for a sentence of at least five years and up to 40 years in prison, at least four years and up to a lifetime of supervised release, and a fine of up to $5 million. Sentences are imposed by a federal district court judge based on the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors. Judge Allison D. Burroughs scheduled sentencing for April 6, 2022.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Hoefle of Mendell’s Organized Crime and Gang Unit is prosecuting the case. Acting United States Attorney Nathaniel R. Mendell, Brian D. Boyle, Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration, Boston Field Division, Colonel Christopher Mason, Superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police, and Lowell Police Chief Raymond Kelly Richardson made the announcement.
Sortsoy was indicted on January 27, 2021. The investigation was a collaborative effort between the DEA, Massachusetts State Police, and Lowell Police Department. The case highlights the importance of interagency cooperation in combating the scourge of drug trafficking.
