Bakersfield Man Sentenced to 5 Years and 9 Months in Prison for Felon in Possession of a Firearm

FRESNO, Calif. – In a shocking turn of events, Vincent Deleon, 32, of Bakersfield, was sentenced to five years and nine months in prison for possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon. United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced the sentencing.

Deleon, a repeat offender, was caught in a sting operation by the FBI’s Violent Crime Task Force. The task force had received information that Deleon, who was wanted on two Kern County felony warrants, was hiding in an apartment on Monterey Street in Bakersfield.

Task force agents set up surveillance and when Deleon came out of the residence, they identified themselves and told him to stop. But Deleon, clearly with a history of lawlessness, immediately fled from the agents and in his flight, threw a Smith & Wesson 9 mm pistol over a fence.

Agents arrested Deleon and found the firearm at the adjacent property. This brazen act of defiance is a testament to the lack of regard Deleon has for the law.

The case was the product of an investigation by the Violent Crime Task Force, which includes Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, and the Kern County Probation Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian K. Delaney prosecuted the case.

This sentencing serves as a reminder that the courts will not tolerate such reckless behavior. Deleon’s sentence sends a strong message that possessing a firearm as a convicted felon will not be taken lightly.

With this conviction, the community is a little bit safer, and the courts have taken a step in the right direction. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and bring you updates as more information becomes available.
