Vincent Gepson, Bank Robbery, Missouri 2022

Bank Robbery Rocks Joplin Community

A brazen bank robbery shook the quiet streets of Joplin, Mo., when 64-year-old Vincent Gepson stormed into Great Southern Bank in broad daylight.

On May 9, 2022, Gepson, armed with a threat, approached the teller counter and demanded $1,000 in cash. The teller, understandably shaken, placed the money in a plastic bag, and Gepson made his escape.

But the getaway was short-lived. The Joplin Police Department sprang into action, posting surveillance photos on social media and calling on the public to identify the suspect. And identify him they did.

Several members of the public came forward, pointing the finger at Gepson. The Acadia Parish, Louisiana, Sheriff’s Department took notice and apprehended Gepson on May 20, 2022.

Gepson’s guilty plea was entered on June 29, 2023, and U.S. Chief District Judge Beth Phillips sentenced him to 12 years and seven months in federal prison without parole.

This case was a collaborative effort between the Joplin Police Department and the FBI, with Assistant U.S. Attorney James J. Kelleher handling the prosecution.

Gepson’s sentence serves as a stark reminder that bank robbery will not be tolerated in our community. The people of Joplin can rest easy knowing that justice has been served.
