A string of violent carjackings in Chicago has landed a 22-year-old man behind bars. Virgil Gibson, of Chicago, has been charged with committing two carjackings in the city earlier this year.
According to an indictment returned in U.S. District Court in Chicago, Gibson stole a Chevrolet Malibu on April 7, 2024, and a Kia K5 on April 8, 2024.
In both incidents, Gibson allegedly brandished a firearm and forcibly took the vehicles from the drivers. In the second carjacking, Gibson also confined the driver against his will and forced him to wire money to Gibson.
The indictment charges Gibson with two counts of carjacking, three counts of brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence, one count of robbery, and one count of kidnapping.
The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in federal prison, and Gibson is currently in law enforcement custody.
Arraignment in federal court is set for August 12, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. before U.S. District Judge Virginia M. Kendall.
The indictment was announced by Morris Pasqual, Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, Christopher Amon, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Division of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and Larry Snelling, Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department.
The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirsten Moran.
The public is reminded that an indictment is not evidence of guilt, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven otherwise.
