Newark, NJ – Federal Election Protection in NJ: The Federal District of New Jersey, under the helm of Federal Prosecutor Paul J. Fishman, is reminding New Jersey voters that they can report irregularities, intimidation, and other electoral abuses on election day through the Election Protection Hotline: (888) 636-6596.
The hotline will be active from November 7th to November 9th, and will be staffed in real-time on election day in both English and Spanish. This initiative, now in its 6th year, aims to foster public confidence in the integrity of the electoral process by providing local points of contact within the Federal District for the public to report potential electoral violations and fraud.
The U.S. Government is committed to ensuring that all qualified voters have the opportunity to cast their ballots and that their votes count, without discrimination, intimidation, or fraud. The Federal District of New Jersey, along with other federal law enforcement agencies, the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, and county election boards, will work together to address electoral complaints and direct them to the appropriate authorities.
The Federal Election Protection Initiative is a critical component of the U.S. Government’s efforts to prevent voter intimidation and ensure that all citizens can exercise their right to vote freely and without fear of reprisal. The law protects voters from crimes such as voter intimidation, bribery, voter impersonation, tampering with voting rolls, stuffing ballot boxes, and marking ballots against a voter’s will.
The law also provides special protections for voters, ensuring that they can vote without intimidation or harassment. For example, actions intended to disrupt or intimidate voters at polling stations, such as challenging, confronting, photographing, or recording voters, citing the need to uncover electoral irregularities, can themselves be considered federal crimes.
The Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Government in Washington will also be available by phone to receive complaints related to electoral rights: 1-800-253-3931 (toll-free) or 202-307-2767. In addition, individuals can report complaints, problems, or concerns related to voting by fax to 202-307-3961, by email to voting.section@usdoj.gov, and through a complaint form available on the U.S. Government’s website: http://www.justice.gov/crt/complaint/votintake/index.php.
