Wanblee Man Jailed for Assault
A 23-year-old Wanblee man has been slapped with a 36-month prison term for his role in a vicious assault that left a woman with a fractured jaw. Jeffrey M. Chips, also known as Jeffrey M. Chipps, was sentenced on May 6, 2013, by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange.
The incident occurred on May 4, 2012, when two women were walking along a road in Mission, South Dakota. A car stopped, and two occupants exited, confronting the women. A fight broke out, and Chips joined in, striking the victim and causing serious bodily injury.
Chips was indicted by a federal grand jury in October 2012 and pleaded guilty to Count II of the Indictment on February 12, 2013. He was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshal after the sentencing.
The case was investigated by Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy Morley handling the prosecution. The U.S. Attorney for the District of South Dakota, Brendan V. Johnson, announced the sentencing.
According to the indictment, the car’s occupants and the victim engaged in a physical altercation, and Chips exited the vehicle to join the fight, resulting in the victim’s serious injuries. The case highlights the importance of addressing violent crime in communities.
