ANCHORAGE, AK – Michael Thomas McTigue, 33, of Wasilla, Alaska, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced yesterday to two years behind bars, followed by one year of supervised release. U.S. District Judge Sharon L. Gleason delivered the sentence for a calculated scheme of online extortion that preyed on vulnerable women.
According to court documents, McTigue trolled women he connected with on Meetme.com and Kik Messenger, building false online relationships. He specifically targeted women who shared sexually explicit photographs with him. But the connection wasn’t about affection – it was about control. McTigue then weaponized those images, threatening to publish them unless his victims complied with his depraved demands.
The scheme escalated when McTigue demanded one victim work as a prostitute and hand over a portion of her earnings. He didn’t stop at threats; he actively posted online advertisements soliciting her services, putting her safety and reputation at extreme risk. The victim, terrified of the exposure, ultimately sent McTigue over $1,000 to silence him. This wasn’t a one-off incident. The FBI investigation revealed a pattern of predatory behavior.
Federal agents uncovered two additional women who had been similarly extorted by McTigue, sending him money to avoid having compromising photos released. Investigators also identified three more women whom McTigue had targeted with online prostitution advertisements, demonstrating the breadth of his exploitation. The FBI’s Safe Streets/Crimes Against Children/Human Trafficking Task Force spearheaded the investigation, bringing together federal, state, and local resources to dismantle McTigue’s operation.
“This case highlights the very real dangers of online interactions and the devastating impact of sextortion,” stated a source within the FBI task force. “Individuals like McTigue exploit trust and vulnerability for their own twisted gain. We are committed to bringing these predators to justice and protecting potential victims.” The task force focuses on locating, apprehending, and prosecuting those who exploit children through sex trafficking and identifying victims.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle Reardon prosecuted the case, securing the conviction and sentencing. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on other instances of online exploitation. Anyone with information regarding similar crimes is urged to contact their local FBI field office or submit a tip online. This sentencing sends a message: online predators will be held accountable for their actions, even in the digital shadows.
