Waterbury’s Aurelle Huckabee, 22, has admitted guilt in the tragic death of a 31-year-old man from an heroin overdose. According to U.S. Attorney Deirdre M. Daly, Huckabee pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Alvin W. Thompson for distributing the fatal dose. The incident, which took place on July 7, 2016, led to the victim’s death at Naugatuck Hospital. Huckabee was arrested in January 2017 and has been detained since. Sentencing is set for June 1, 2017. The investigation was a joint effort between the DEA’s New Haven Tactical Diversion Squad and local police departments.
Naugatuck Police and emergency medical services responded to the overdose call and recovered heroin from the scene. The victim’s cellphone revealed hundreds of text messages indicating a regular supply of heroin by Huckabee in the weeks prior to the incident. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed the death was due to acute fentanyl intoxication.
Huckabee faces up to 20 years in prison for his role in the distribution that led to this tragic outcome. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick F. Caruso.
This initiative targets dealers who distribute dangerous substances like heroin and fentanyl, aiming to prevent deaths and serious injuries. The Tactical Diversion Squad includes multiple police departments from across Connecticut, highlighting the collaborative effort to combat drug trafficking.
Huckabee’s plea agreement marks a significant victory in the ongoing fight against drug-related crimes in the state.
