Anthony Kyle O’Donnell, Gang-Related Shooting, IA 2025

Waterloo, Iowa – A chilling incident that shook the community has reached its somber conclusion as Anthony Kyle O’Donnell, 37, from Waterloo, was sentenced to fifteen years in federal prison for his role in a gang-related shooting. The sentence, handed down on August 19, 2025, by United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams, followed O’Donnell’s guilty plea on November 18, 2024, to possession of a firearm by a felon.

The violence erupted on the afternoon of August 21, 2022, when four individuals clad in all black clothes unleashed thirty-four rounds of ammunition at a residence in Waterloo. Inside were eight people, including a two-year-old child. The bullets pierced through living room walls and a bedroom, with four occupants suffering bleeding injuries from broken glass, one receiving a graze.

Law enforcement swiftly responded to the scene. They found O’Donnell, still dressed in black and sweating, about a block away from where three firearms were discovered in a shed. DNA evidence linked O’Donnell to one of the firearms—a stolen Beretta pistol—used in the shooting.

Prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kyndra Lundquist and investigated by a Federal Task Force including the Waterloo Police Department, FBI, ATF, Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office, and Cedar Falls Police Department, the case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence across communities.

O’Donnell must also serve a three-year term of supervised release following his prison sentence. There is no parole in the federal system, ensuring he will remain behind bars for the duration of his punishment.
