Wendell Willkie, the Republican challenger, has taken a slim lead over incumbent President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the electoral vote count. According to a Gallup poll, Willkie would carry 24 of the 48 states, with a total of 304 electoral votes, just 38 short of the 266 needed to secure the White House.
