COEUR D’ALENE – Nathanael Michael West, 28, is headed back to a cage for a long stretch. The career offender was sentenced to 96 months – eight years – in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release on July 31, 2025, after admitting to a pattern of brazen threats against those who dared to put him behind bars. U.S. Attorney Scott E. Bradford for the District of Oregon announced the sentence, a clear message that attacking the justice system carries a heavy price.
This isn’t West’s first rodeo. Court records show the man has a history of targeting those who prosecute him. In October 2022, he received a federal sentence for mailing threatening communications to three state prosecutors. Apparently, that wasn’t enough to deter him. While serving time in an Idaho state prison for burglary, West doubled down on his intimidation tactics. In February 2023, he penned a letter to Assistant United States Attorney David Robins – the very man who successfully prosecuted the cases that landed him in prison. The letter wasn’t a polite note; it was a graphic, detailed description of how West intended to assault, kidnap, torture, mutilate, and ultimately murder Robins.
Less than two weeks later, the threats escalated. In March 2023, West turned his attention to Chief U.S. District Judge David C. Nye, the judge who originally sentenced him in October 2022. Another letter, another chilling account of planned violence – this time, a vivid description of how he would assault and murder the judge. West clearly believes he’s above the law, or at least immune to its consequences. He was dead wrong.
A federal grand jury in Idaho returned a four-count indictment on August 14, 2024, charging West with mailing threatening communications, threatening to assault, kidnap, or murder a federal law enforcement officer with intent to retaliate, and threatening to assault or murder a United States Judge with intent to retaliate. West ultimately pleaded guilty to all four counts on July 31, 2025, likely realizing the evidence against him was insurmountable. The sentencing will be served consecutively to his prior sentences from 2020 and 2022 in Idaho – meaning West isn’t getting any breaks.
“The 96-month sentence in this case is appropriate and justified, reflecting the seriousness, brazen, and violent nature of the defendant’s persistent threats,” Bradford stated. “The defendant’s deliberate actions were not only incredibly personal to the victims in this case, but they were also an assault on the integrity of the criminal justice system.” Bradford’s words aren’t just rhetoric; they underscore the danger posed by individuals who attempt to silence or intimidate those upholding the law.
The case was handled with a degree of internal maneuvering. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Idaho recused itself, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas H. Edmonds from the District of Oregon was specially appointed to prosecute. Edmonds reported directly to the Deputy Attorney General, ensuring an objective and thorough investigation. Bradford specifically commended the FBI for their work on the case, highlighting the importance of federal cooperation in tackling threats against the justice system. This conviction sends a clear signal: threaten a federal official, and you’ll pay the price.”
