Nathanael Michael West, Threats Against Federal Officials, Idaho 2025

COEUR D’ALENE – The grim halls of justice were echoed with a resounding judgment as Nathanael Michael West, 28, was handed an eight-year sentence for his brazen threats against federal officials. On July 31, 2025, the District of Oregon’s U.S. Attorney Scott E. Bradford announced the sentence, which includes three years’ supervised release following the federal prison term.

West’s saga began in October 2022 when he was sentenced for mailing threatening communications to state prosecutors. But his reach extended further behind bars in February 2023, where he penned a chilling letter to Assistant United States Attorney David Robins, detailing graphic threats of assault, kidnapping, and murder. Less than two weeks later, West sent another letter to Chief U.S. District Judge David C. Nye, vowing to assault and murder the judge who had sentenced him.

In August 2024, a federal grand jury in Idaho indicted West on four counts, including mailing threatening communications and threatening to assaulting or murdering a federal law enforcement officer with intent to retaliate. On July 31, 2025, West pleaded guilty to all charges.

“The 96-month sentence reflects the seriousness of West’s persistent threats,” said U.S. Attorney Bradford. “These actions were not only personal but an attack on the criminal justice system.”

The case was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas H. Edmonds, appointed as Special Attorney to the United States Attorney General for this prosecution.

U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Idaho recused itself from the case, allowing the FBI to conduct a thorough investigation that led to West’s conviction.
