David Elwood Hess, Distributing Controlled Substances, West Virginia 2023

CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – A West Virginia doctor’s pill-pushing scheme has finally been exposed after a federal jury found him guilty of distributing controlled substances and destroying crucial evidence.

David Elwood Hess, 60, of Bridgeport, West Virginia, a once-trusted physician, was convicted of four counts of improper prescribing and one count of destroying records in a federal investigation. The jury’s verdict brings an end to a reckless prescribing practice that put countless lives at risk.

According to prosecutors, Hess wrote prescriptions for Adderall to his patients without a legitimate medical purpose, disregarding the well-being of those under his care. The evidence shows that he prioritized his own desires over the health and safety of his patients, committing a heinous crime that has put many lives at risk.

“Dr. Hess was reckless in his prescribing and put himself and his sexual desire ahead of the wellbeing of his patients,” said United States Attorney William Ihlenfeld. “His sexual misconduct corrupted his decision-making and put his patients at great risk. Thanks to the jury’s verdict and the excellent work of investigators and prosecutors, Dr. Hess will be held accountable for his crimes.”

The investigation, led by the Drug Enforcement Administration, uncovered a trail of evidence that revealed Hess’s true intentions. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Andrew Cogar and Eleanor Hurney prosecuted the case on behalf of the government, ensuring that justice would be served.

Hess will be sentenced by Chief U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Kleeh once a pre-sentence investigation report has been completed. The punishment for his crimes will serve as a warning to other healthcare professionals who would seek to exploit their positions for personal gain.

As the Grimy Times continues to expose the darkest secrets of the medical profession, one thing is clear – patients deserve better than to be treated as pawns in a doctor’s twisted game.
