Michael A. Wilt, 56, of Buckhannon, West Virginia, has been indicted on federal charges for using digital devices to lure a 14-year-old girl into illegal sexual activity. The grim details, laid out in a federal indictment, paint the picture of a calculated predator exploiting technology to target a minor.
Between August 8 and September 15, 2016, Wilt used a computer and cellular phone to repeatedly attempt to persuade, induce, entice, and coerce the underage girl into engaging in illicit sexual conduct. Federal prosecutors say the communications were explicit and intentional, part of a broader pattern of grooming behavior aimed at manipulating the victim.
The indictment escalates with Wilt’s physical movement across state lines. On or about September 15, 2016, he knowingly traveled from West Virginia into Ohio with the specific intent to meet the girl and carry out illegal sexual acts. The charge falls under Title 18, United States Code, Section 2423(f), which criminalizes travel for the purpose of engaging in illicit sexual conduct with a minor.
Wilt now faces charges of enticement of a minor and interstate travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct, both serious federal offenses. If convicted, the court will determine his sentence based on factors including his role in the crime, any prior criminal record, and the severity of the violations. The statutory maximum penalties loom, though actual sentencing may vary.
The case was investigated by the Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and Homeland Security Investigations, with prosecution handled by Assistant United States Attorney Michael A. Sullivan. The collaboration underscores the multi-agency effort to track and dismantle online predators who exploit children across state lines.
An indictment is not a conviction. Michael A. Wilt is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The government bears the burden of proving his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial. The case remains active as federal authorities move toward resolution.
