Okoye Jabrayll Day, Home Invasion Attempt, Alabama 2024

MOBILE, AL – Okoye Jabrayll Day, 23, of Mobile, is trading the streets for a federal prison cell after being sentenced to 60 months behind bars for illegally possessing a firearm during a brutal home invasion attempt. The incident, which left one suspect dead, unfolded at an apartment complex on April 16, 2024, and quickly devolved into a chaotic shootout.

Mobile Police Department officers responded to frantic 911 calls reporting a break-in in progress. The victim, defending his home, told dispatchers he’d fired upon armed intruders before barricading himself in the bathroom. A second caller reported multiple gunshots and identified Day, despite being in a wheelchair, as fleeing the scene clutching a handgun. What officers found was a scene of carnage: a door splintered and ripped from its hinges, bullet holes riddling the apartment’s walls and ceiling, and one suspect already dead from a gunshot wound outside the victim’s door.

The search quickly led police to Day, apprehended in a neighboring building. He’d attempted to ditch the evidence – a loaded Glock .45 caliber pistol – in nearby bushes. Ring doorbell footage corroborated the 911 reports, clearly showing Day, the deceased suspect, and two other unidentified men violently assaulting the victim’s apartment door. The attempted burglary wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment act; it was a coordinated, and ultimately failed, assault.

During questioning, Day offered a chillingly pragmatic explanation for carrying the weapon. He claimed he needed it “for [his] protection,” admitting he’d been previously shot and paralyzed. He also readily confessed to throwing the Glock into the bushes, acknowledging he was “on paper” – a convicted felon still under supervision. That prior record is what sealed his fate. Day already had felony convictions for first-degree receiving stolen property and discharging a firearm into an occupied building, making his possession of the Glock a clear violation of federal law.

U.S. District Judge Terry F. Moorer didn’t show leniency. In addition to the 60-month prison sentence, Day will face a three-year term of supervised release upon his release, including mandatory mental health evaluation and treatment. While a fine was waived, Judge Moorer ordered Day to pay $100 in special assessments and authorized the forfeiture of the Glock pistol and ammunition to the United States government. This isn’t just about a gun; it’s about a repeat offender who put lives at risk.

U.S. Attorney Sean P. Costello of the Southern District of Alabama announced the sentencing, emphasizing the case is part of “Operation Take Back America,” a nationwide initiative aimed at combating violent crime and dismantling transnational criminal organizations. The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Mobile Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin Roller prosecuted the case, ensuring Day faced the consequences for his actions. The streets of Mobile are a little safer tonight, but the investigation into the two remaining suspects continues.
