WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA – A local man has been indicted on a firearms charge after a federal grand jury handed down the indictment.

Michael Shawndale Davis, 36, of Wheeling, West Virginia, is accused of having a .45 caliber revolver in October 2019 in Ohio County, despite being prohibited from having firearms due to two prior felony convictions.

The indictment charges Davis with one count of ‘Unlawful Possession of a Firearm,’ a crime that carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

Assistant U.S. Attorney David J. Perri will be prosecuting the case on behalf of the government. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Wheeling Police Department investigated the case.

The indictment is part of the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s efforts to reduce violent crime through Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN). PSN is a program that brings together stakeholders to identify and address violent crime problems in the community.

Davis is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. The case will now move forward in federal court.

The Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative is a key part of the government’s efforts to reduce violent crime and make communities safer. By focusing enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partnering with prevention and reentry programs, PSN aims to reduce violent crime and improve public safety.
