A brutal assault has shaken the community of Eagle Butte, South Dakota, as 22-year-old Colton White Feather has been indicted for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury.
According to the indictment, White Feather allegedly used a mop handle to assault an adult female on July 29, 2016, causing serious injuries to her. The maximum penalty for this crime is up to 10 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and up to $200 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
White Feather appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on May 19, 2017, and pled not guilty to the Indictment. The investigation is being conducted by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller prosecuting the case.
The charges are merely accusations, and White Feather is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. White Feather was released on bond pending trial. A trial date has not been set.
