Assaulting a Federal Officer Lands Mission Man 8 Months in Custody

A Mission, South Dakota man has been sentenced to 8 months in custody for Assaulting a Federal Officer. Richard One Feather, 47, was sentenced on January 30, 2017, by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange.

One Feather was convicted of Assaulting, Opposing, Resisting, and Impeding a Federal Officer, according to court documents.

The incident occurred on March 29, 2016, when a Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services Officer observed One Feather speeding and swerving. The officer pursued One Feather to a house in the Soldier Creek Community, where he was found to be visibly intoxicated.

One Feather refused to comply with the officer’s commands and actively resisted arrest, kicking the officer in the leg. The officer then pepper-sprayed One Feather, placed him on the ground, and handcuffed him.

The case was investigated by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk W. Albertson prosecuting the case.

One Feather was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. He was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and serve 2 years of supervised release after his prison sentence is completed.

One Feather was indicted by a federal grand jury on April 13, 2016, and pled guilty on November 8, 2016.
