WICHITA, KAN. – A Wichita man is facing federal charges after allegedly trafficking a 17-year-old girl for sex, Acting U.S. Attorney Tom Beall announced Tuesday. The case, born from a joint operation targeting human trafficking, exposes the dark underbelly of exploitation operating within the city.
John H. Dickerson, 34, of Wichita, Kan., has been charged with one count of sex trafficking of a minor and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm following a prior felony conviction. The charges stem from an investigation that began with a chilling discovery: an online advertisement for sexual services.
On Saturday, Oct. 15, a Wichita Police detective, responding to the ad on an adult services website, arranged a meeting with a purported sex worker at a local hotel, offering $200 for an hour of service. What unfolded was far more sinister. Dickerson arrived at the hotel room, not as a service provider, but as a pimp, delivering a 17-year-old girl into a dangerous situation. Both Dickerson and the girl were immediately taken into custody.
Investigators quickly pieced together the grim reality. Evidence suggests Dickerson had repeatedly transported the girl to meet customers, profiting from her exploitation. The FBI and Wichita Police Department’s collaborative effort ripped back the curtain on a calculated scheme to prey on a vulnerable minor. The details of the prior felony conviction that led to the firearm charge have not been released at this time.
If convicted on the sex trafficking charge, Dickerson faces a minimum of 10 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000. The unlawful firearm possession charge carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. The federal penalties reflect the severity of the crimes and the commitment to prosecuting those who exploit vulnerable individuals.
The investigation was a coordinated effort between the Wichita Police Department, the FBI, and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Hart is leading the prosecution. This case serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive nature of human trafficking and the urgent need for continued vigilance and enforcement.
